The 37mm Stroke, 6.5lb Air Muscle is a soft pneumatic device, ideally suited for robotics and animatronics. Developed in the 1950's by J.L. McKibben, like biological muscles, air muscles contract when pressurized with air. Simple systems can use a small air pump or compressor. The size of the air muscle and the air pressure determines the weight of the load it can pull when it contracts. Typically air muscles can contract up to twenty five percent of their elongated length.

Air muscles have applications in robotics, biorobotics, biomechanics, artificial limb replacement and industry. Air muscles have a high power to weight ratio (400:1) and can be used underwater.
