Quad-Rotors Team Builds a 6m Tower

Quad-Rotor Building Tower

“Intelligent” quad-rotor robots are quite capable and never cease to amaze. We saw them doing aggressive aerial manoeuvres in the past, but this time it seems the quad-rotors are through showing-off their reckless flying and are moving on to more constructive endeavours.

ETH Zurich roboticist Raffaello D’Andrea and architects Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler teamed up to have the quad-rotors build a 1:100 scale model of a tower envisioned by the architects. This resulted in the first art installation to be built by flying robots: a 6 m tall tower made out of Styrofoam blocks. The quad-rotor team was coordinated by “The Foreman”, a computer which oversaw the entire operation from a motion capture rig using 19 IR cameras placed on the ceiling. Since this task was quite long and took several hours, the robots took turns so some of them could charge their batteries while the others worked.

For those wondering how do the robots grip the blocks, know that they use a specially designed gripper that punctured and held the brick as shown in the picture below.

Where is WALL-E?

Friday, August 19th, 2011

If you ever wondered how all fictional robots would look like in a single picture, see below for the answer in this beautifully rendered Where is Wally? parody (Where’s Waldo? for Canada and USA).

National Geographic Gets Into Robotics

Friday, July 29th, 2011

The August issue of National Geographic magazine features a fascinating article on robots, find it on newsstands July 26th 2011. In ”Making Robots Human,” the author Chris Carroll explores the world of robotics, and the advances in technology that allow robots to speak, blink, smile and perform such tasks as folding clothes and cooking. From childcare provider to chef, roboticists have big plans for these human-like machines, which raises the question: how human is too human?

The First Robot Film Festival Was a Success, New Robotic Stars Are Born

Monday, July 25th, 2011

On July 17th and 18th, the first Robot Film Festival took place in New York City. Organized by popular roboticist Heather Knight, the festival brought together robotic builders, engineers, artists, and robot lovers in general. As in other film festivals, there was a screening of the selected films, a red carpet ceremony, and several live performances by local artists throughout the event.

See the festival welcome video below explaining the main “raison d’etre” of the festival.

A notable participant to the festival was Nao 1337, the star of the short movie “Nao 1337 Audition“. The robot actively participated to the event, watched its own film and even walked the red carpet as shown in the videos below.

Robots Shift Shape and Fits In Your Clothes

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

The Fit Bot by fits.me started as a human male-shaped robot that would adjust to a man’s body size in order to test fit clothes when buying at on-line retailers. Now, they developed a female version of the robot that can don ladies’ clothes in a “prettier”way.

As shown in the video, the robot can adapt to take pretty much any shape a human can have by shifting the soft panels that make up its body.

Robot Hacker Makes Documentary about Love

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Tim Heath is a robot maker and hacker. We wrote about his work in the past with cellphone robots. Now he is into a new project that requires a completely new set of skills: marriage.

Cellphone-based Quadcopter, one of Tim's Projects

Much like hacking together robots out of cell phones and vacuum cleaners, Tim applies open source and hacker philosophy to marriage as he puts together unexpected pieces in order to build his new life.

Great for him, but why are we reporting this? Simply because he needs your help. He is putting together a documentary (geeks love do document their projects!) and he invites everybody to help him fund some of the filmmaking expenses trough KickStarter.

See the documentary trailer below and hurry up since there is only one week left for contributing to the project.

I’m Here, A Robot Love Story

Monday, May 30th, 2011

For all cinephiles out there, you are in for a treat. There is a new short film by Spike Jonze. It is a robot love story called “I’m here”.

You can see the trailer below and you can go directly to the film website in order to have  full cinematic experience and see the entire movie for free. There are limited “screenings” per day so hurry up!

The robots look amazing (as amazing as old IBM towers can be!) and the story line is quite nice. Go see it for yourselves and leave a comment below; tell us what you liked or even hated about it.

RobotShop Goes the Extra Mile for Their Customers

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

At RobotShop, we sometimes get pretty strange requests from customers wanting some special service or exceptions on their order, and we always strive to give the best service and to make sure our customers are satisfied and get what they want. The picture below shows a sample of our warehouse team dedication. When a customer asked to have a picture of a dinosaur drawn, they did exactly that and included it with the order.

Customer request a dinosaur and he gets it.

Sometimes it is hard to believe we are still in the robotics business. With such potential,  we should be moving into fine arts!

Celebrities as Cyborgs

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

It is not very often that we get to showcase  (non robotic) Hollywood celebrity pictures.  Today we are lucky, a contest from Worth100.com resulted in transforming many famous actors and singers into cyborgs. See the pictures below for some Photoshop pleasure.
