Obama is the Friend of Robots, Announces Robotic Revolution

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

United States president Barak Obama announced a major manufacturing initiative from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The idea is to create an  ”Advanced Manufacturing Partnership” (AMP) that brings together major U.S. manufacturers and top U.S. universities in order to invigorate the local manufacturing activities.

The video above features the full Obama speech at CMU. The video is 22 minutes long,  but is filled with interesting information about the current robotic market and nice bits of humor.

Android + Arduino + ROS = Cloud Robotics

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Another important announcement for the field of robotics was made at Google IO 2011 that complements the announcement for the Android Open Accessory Kit.

As shown in the video below about Cloud Robotics (this presentation is very interesting and explores somewhat involved robot programming), there is a new implementation of ROS, the popular operating system for robots, that runs directly on Android. Even PR2 was invited to the talk!

This means that any ROS compatible robot  (including Arduino-based robots) can be controlled via an Android phone, including the popular PR2. This interoperability and the power of cloud computing could provide robots, in the future, with better abilities especially when facing unexpected situations. With the power of the cloud, robots can offload complex computations and thus require less electrical power for computations. They could also learn new skills on the fly without needing to have all possible skills installed at once.

We are also happy to see that this technology is accessible to everyone through the use of Arduino and Open Hardware. RobotShop’s MyRobots.com initiative is compatible with this vision ans also aims to give robots, and robot owners, the power of the cloud though Open Hardware and Software.

Google Embraces Open Hardware

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Google announced in the yearly Google IO event the release of the Android Open Accessory Kit. This kit consists basically of an Arduino Mega combined with the USB host shield and some customized firmware. What this allows us to do is to create Android applications that will interact with an Arduino and thus with the external world. Since this is open source software and hardware, everybody can start developing around this concept right away.

This is a great opportunity to give robots a good powerful Android-based brain in a simple way. Of course, that was possible in the past but it just got much simpler. We are eager to see what the community comes up with in the future.

You can see the entire Keynote below but they only Start to talk about Arduino at minute 36.

Robotic Summit 2011

Robotic Summit 2011

On March 10th, 2011 Robotics Trends will be hosting the NextGen Education & Research Robotics Virtual Summit. This year’s summit will focus on the use of robotics to accelerate learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among  K-12 and college-level students.

NextGen Education & Research Robotics Virtual Summit

NextGen Education & Research Robotics Virtual Summit

The summit offers an important opportunity for educators, governments, and others to share their experiences, results and ideas for robotics and its applications in education. The program will showcase leading solution providers whose products and services target the educational robotics market.

Of course, RobotShop will be attending and we would be very glad if you came by to visit us at our booth. We are very interested in the application of robotic technology in education and want to contribute to this future development.

Obama vs. Screaming Robot Seal, HRP-4C Stands Close-by

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

In his recent trip to Japan, USA President Barack Obama had the pleasure to meet with HRP-4C (the robotic dancing Diva) and Paro (a robot baby seal). He also got to sit in the latest Toyota i-REAL personal transportation vehicle.

Below you can see a video of the event. Note how noisy PARO can be.

More heads of state such as Russian Medvedev, Chinese Hu Jintao, and Chilean Sebastián Piñera were also present and had a chance to meet the robots.

2010 Robot World, Korean Robot Showcase

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Robot World is a Korean robotic trade-show. The latest installment was held from October 28th to October 31st 2010, showcasing Korea’s latest military, industrial, and service robots. Of course, some international exhibitors Aldebaran Robotics from France (showcasing the Nao) , and DasaRobot from Taiwan (Showcasing the Genibo).

CARPI, a Powerful Robotic Conference

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010
CARPI 2010 - 1st International Conference on Applied Robotics for the Power Industry

CARPI 2010 - 1st International Conference on Applied Robotics for the Power Industry

The first International Conference on Applied Robotics for the Power Industry (CARPI 2010) is about to take place in Montreal. Starting on October 5th, this three-day conference will bring together experts from two different communities: robotics developers,  and power industry end-users.

LineScout by HydroQuebec

LineScout by Hydro Quebec

The main goal of CARPI is to promote robotic innovation in the power production and distribution industry.  This year’s focus is the development of transmission line and power systems maintenance robots. The event will be hosted by Hydro Quebec and will take place in down-town Montreal. It is expected to bring together approximately 250 R&D decision makers and robotics developers.

Let’s hope we can see some LineScout siblings in the near future.

ICRA 2010: from the 3rd to the 8th of May in Alaska

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

ICRA

This year, the International Confrence on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) will take place in Anchorage, Alaska, from May 3rd to 8th 2010.

Major players in robotics, such as iRobot, Aldebaran Robotics, Boston Dynamics, Gostai, Willow Garage and Kuka will be present.

The theme of the 2010 ICRA is “50 years of robotics“.

Research institutes such as MIT or Stanford will also be present.

ICRA will also count on the participation of the DARPA (the Agency of the United States Department of Defense).

The conference is organized by IEEE-Ras, a world famous organization. IEEE defines itself as the largest association in the world for the advancement of technology.

Les Promesses de la robotique

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Promesses Robotique

On March 30, ‘Les Promesses de la Robotique’ (the promises of robotics) meeting was held at the ‘Mardis de l’Innovation’ (Innovation Tuesdays) in France.

The guests discussed the progress of robotics and its applications in our modern society.

Amongst those attending were several recognizable faces from leading companies in the field: Philippe Nikolov (Carrefour des possibles), FING, Bruno Bonnell from Robopolis, Bruno Maisonnier from Aldebaran Robotics, Vincent Dupourqué from Robosoft and Jean-Christophe Baillie from Gostai.

Bruno Bonnell, founder of Infogrames and Infonie, is the director of Robopolis in France and also the president of SYROBO (European Robotics Association).

We suggest you read the Sanscontact blog article (in French) which summarizes the day of the ‘Promesses de la Robotique’.

Robotics Summit 2010

We told you in January about the virtual conference organized by Robotic Trends on 16 June 2010.

This time the event, called Robotics Summit, has been given its own internet site: www.robovirtualevents.com.

This conference aims to be a new international meeting place for roboticists, professionals or just robotics fans.

You can see an overview of the visual interface on this page.

Everything will be organised as if you were at a real conference, on the premises, but the advantage of this type of event is that it saves travelling and accommodation costs.

In terms of the themes covered concerning the development of robots, you’ll find sessions on control systems, sensor technologies, localization, navigation, mapping, obtaining data, robot learning, remote monitoring, planning movements, avoiding obstacles, etc.

Regarding business development, investments or fundraising, this conference will enable you to network and find business partners, marketing networks (purchases/sales), and development opportunities in mobile robotics.
