Watson Tied Humans at Jeopardy! We Might Not be Doomed… Yet

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011
IBM Watson

IBM Watson

Watson, a super computer from IBM is challenging the human Jeopardy! champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter in the first Man vs. Machine Jeopardy! competition.

Below you can see a nice teaser for the competition.

The first round already took place on Monday, February 14th 2011, and resulted in a tie between Brad and the machine. Although Watson lead most part of the game, it got some wrong answers near the end which set it back considerably.

The match will continue on Tuesday the  15th and Wednesday the 16th. So far humanity still has a chance but it is quite possible that we will all be obsolete by the end of this match.

You can see the full first round below as it was kindly uploaded  by a YouTube user.

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

July 19, 2010, is a holiday in Japan (Marine Day which takes place on the 3rd Monday in July) and for the occasion this year a competition of cleaning robots on the beach (the 13th event focused on robotics) has been organized.

What a great environmentally-friendly idea!

The event is centered on the 3 Rs: Reduce pollution, Reuse and Recycle.

There are two guidelines on the agenda:

1. to create marine rescue robots,

2. to develop robots that pick up litter on the beaches.

Nao performs at Shanghai

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Nao Shangai

We told you earlier about our exclusive interview conducted with Bruno Maisonnier from Aldebaran Robotics.

Extract:

Shanghai 2010?

The Shanghai 2010 world expo is a real accolade. Nao is both the mascot of the French pavilion and one of the main attractions of the French pavilion. It might also be here that I give you a scoop: Twenty Nao robots will perform a synchronized dance in the French pavilion. This world first will take place on the day of the music festival and will allow us to assert ourselves, in the eyes of the world, as the international leader in humanoid robotics.

Let’s say that the music celebration has been moved forward for our great pleasure. No, actually, this is a rehearsal before the show to the public on June 21.

Watch this exceptional performance of 20 Nao dancing to Bolero by Ravel:

What’s more, Nao is really the big star of the moment: the little humanoid robot will be the French superstar at Robocup 2010.

Marriedbyrobot claims to be the first wedding robot

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Marriedbyrobot

A couple in Chicago claims that their wedding robot marriedbyrobot.com was the first priest with bolts in the world to officiate a wedding.

But why?

Because, two weeks ago i-Fairy by Tomohiro Shibata and Satoko Inoue stole the spotlight in Japan by making a world tour in the press.

The couple’s 8 foot (2.44 m) tall Nuptron 4000 would therefore be the first marrying priest in the world.

What’s more, they say they have videos to prove it.

Until proven otherwise…

Dinosaur Robots in Chicago

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Dinosaur Robots

KumoTek Robotics launches an exhibition of prehistoric robots in Chicago: Sue Escapes.

The robots come from Kokoro, Japan.

The main attraction is RoboSue, a Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur always ready to entertain the kids!

The realism of the animals and their interaction with visitors certainly promises a great success for this type of event, which is of course a must-see for the whole family.

Willow Garage Event

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Willow Garage celebrated its PR2 launch event in style.

Not one but a good dozen PR2s were there to dance to the rhythm of the music.

What’s more, the robots paraded holding the hand of their partner…human partner: -)

A great moment for Open Source robotics.
