Robotland the Robot park in South Korea

Robotland

South Korea wants to build, not just one, but two Robotland theme parks.

First ones in the world.

Already a dedicated site, Robotland, talks about these huge projects that carry a hefty budget nearing 675 million US dollars.

Incheon Robot Land” should open in 2012 and plans to welcome 3 million visitors each year.

While the first park will be located on the west coast, the second one will be built in Masan City, in the South-East coast.

However, tensions among the investors of the two parks are already building up even if they are not even built yet.

According to Plastic Pals, there should not be any competition since Incheon will focus primarily on domestic robots while Masan City’s theme will be industrial robots, health care, and submarine robots.

PR2 Willow Garage

Willow Garage has launched an initiative to create and develop Open Source robotics.

It is based on its PR2 (Personal Robot 2) physical platform and on its ROS (Robot Operating System) open source software application.

Initially the firm will provide ten PR2′s to research organizations.

The purpose of Willow Garage is encouraging progress in personal robotics, developing reusable components and creating a free global community for researchers and developers.

The fields of application for their PR2 beta robot (photos above and below) are multiple: assisting the elderly and people with self-reliance issues (carrying items, preparing food, monitoring medical data, and so on), helping in household chores (dishes, laundry, etc.) and performing various manual operations such as taking and storing objects in cabinets.

A fake 8 foot high robot at the 2010 International Boat Show

Friday, February 5th, 2010

A huge 8 foot tall (2.44 m) robot was seen providing entertainment at the 2010 International Boat Show.

Naturally, here we see that there is clearly someone inside, because the gestures and reactions are as natural as those of a human.

It makes you think of the Gitex robot, but more humanized.

One must admit that the costume is very well accomplished.

Robosaurus eats cars

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Robosaurus is a true dinosaur robot, 12 feet high; it is used at motorsport events, particularly at monster truck shows.

The monster was built in 1989 by Doug Malewicki; it shreds and swallows cars, and breathes flames out of its nostrils.

The driver of the vehicle is set up in the Robosaurus’ head.

You better move out of its way if you run into it in the street ;-)

Here it is in action, in a new video announcing its arrival at America’s Worst Driver:

One robot a day with garbage

Weird Robots Force One

One Robot a Day is an strange but environmentally-friendly initiative from a group called the Weird Force One.

Their goal: recover waste from the streets, collect from trash and garbage dumps and turn everything they gather into small robots.

The idea is commendable because it is environmentally responsible, even if it is very unique. You be the Judge :-)

You can see some photos of their creations on their Facebook page.
