The First Robot Film Festival Was a Success, New Robotic Stars Are Born

Monday, July 25th, 2011

On July 17th and 18th, the first Robot Film Festival took place in New York City. Organized by popular roboticist Heather Knight, the festival brought together robotic builders, engineers, artists, and robot lovers in general. As in other film festivals, there was a screening of the selected films, a red carpet ceremony, and several live performances by local artists throughout the event.

See the festival welcome video below explaining the main “raison d’etre” of the festival.

A notable participant to the festival was Nao 1337, the star of the short movie “Nao 1337 Audition“. The robot actively participated to the event, watched its own film and even walked the red carpet as shown in the videos below.

Blinky is Your New Best Friend

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

As announced previously, Ruairi Robinson’s short Blinky™ is now out and free for everybody to watch. Nevertheless, since this is sort of a horror film, viewer discretion is advised.

We really like this short since the robots are depicted with a great sense of detail and realism. It also shows how robots in the near future could help us with everyday tasks. Of course, we also like the cliché horror flick side.

Should we be afraid of robots now?

Probably not. This movie raises the very interesting topic or robot ethics. This means that robots need to have a sense of what is right and wrong in order to be able to interact with human beings in everyday life. Blindly obeying every command given by a human, for instance, may not be a very good idea (as it is clearly shown in the short) ; a sense of ethics would allow a robot to discrimitate between good and bad commands.

The video below clearly illustrates how ethics are being incorporated into robots, more specifically, into the Nao from Aldebaran.

How Hard can Impersonating a Robot Be?

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Humans tend to think that impersonating a robot is simply a matter of moving stiffly and talking in a silly way. In the hilarious video below, Simon Peg and Nick Frost impersonate two of the best known robots in the world, namely R2D2 and C3PO, which can be very challenging.

Bots High, Like Football for Geeks

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

At RobotShop, we sometimes wonder where all the robot parts we sell end up, what robots are being made with them and which robots were successful and which were not.

The impending release of Bots High, a documentary about a group of high school students who build combat robots to compete in the high school division of BotsIQ (the non-profit version of BattleBots, the former TV show), gives us some clues of where at least some of the parts we sold ended up.

The documentary follows a group of students who build impressively complex and advanced robots with the objective of smashing, crushing and completely obliterating other equally complex robots. The matches are certainly fun to watch; sort of like sporting events but much, much geekier.

The videos below show the nature of competition and the crazily powerful robots that participate in it.

Keep watching for even more robotic destruction:

BLINKY: Do Not Trust the Happy Robot

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

The trailer for the upcoming short film BLINKY by Ruairi Robinson has been released. See it below.

The film is set in a not so distant future and features a domestic robot that apparently turns into a rampaging killer…Either that, or it enjoys ketchup too much.

Transcendent Man to be Launched in 2011

Sentient Robot

Sentient Robot

The trailer for the upcoming movie Transcendent Man has been out for some time and it has now been confirmed that the long awaited film will be released early next year (2011).

Transcendent Man introduces the life and ideas of Ray Kurzweil, the renowned futurist who journeys the world offering his vision of a future in which we will merge with our machines, can live forever, and are billions of times more intelligent…all within the next thirty years.

Although it is a bit hard to believe that humans will become infinitely intelligent cybernetic immortals within the next 30 years Ray Kurzweil seems to have some good arguments and some successful predictions done in the past.

For those unfamiliar with The Singularity as understood by Ray Kurzweil, you might be interested in the TED talk Below.

A slightly more negative view of the same future would be the Trailer for the upcoming Deux Ex game.
