The Trons, Trashy Robots Can Rock Too

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

The Trons is a robotic rock band (or orchestrion) from New Zealand. They are mainly made out of old junk and salvaged electronics, and have performed over 80 “live” shows in the last three years. Although they are cybernetic, we are sure they play form the bottom of their harts …er microcontrollers.

In the video below, besides listening to their awesome music, pay close attention to the vintage Meccano parts, the solenoids from old printers, and all the beautiful junk in general.

Violinist robot by Toyota

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

violinist robot

The violinist robot by Toyota recently made a good impression at the 2010 Expo in Shanghai.

It’s not its first appearance, far from it since it dates from 2007, but its movements and natural ease have made it seem even more human-like.

The robot by Toyota appeared in Japan’s pavilion at the Expo.

So, professional violinists will now have a little friend of theirs beside them in orchestras of the future: -)

Video We Are Robots at the ETS Montreal and ABB Percussionist

Monday, May 10th, 2010

On Friday evening the We Are Robots techno-dance night took place at the ETS Montreal and SAT.

We’ve already found two videos of the event which featured dancing industrial robots (robotic arms) by the ABB Robotics company.

Here’s a glimpse of the evening:

The music is a remix by Techno Squirrels, Love Come First. The complete remix is here for those who love the beat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RON-OJcZOjk

On the other hand, still with an ABB arm, here’s a specimen which played the percussion last month in Germany with real musicians and preprogrammed sequences:

Robots that play Guitar Hero

Robot Guitar Hero

The popular video game Guitar Hero transcends from a game for humans to a game for robots.

In Guitar Hero you have to play the guitar following instructions on the screen while trying to make the least number of mistakes possible.

But why risk wrong notes when a robot can take charge and achieve 100% success?

Here are 3 experimental models of robots specialized in Guitar Hero:

The musical robot that plays drums is born.

Jazari is controlled by two Nintendo Wii remotes. The designer is Jazari Music’s Patrick Flanagan.

The Wiimote allows accelerating or slowing down the percussion beat as well as adjusting the volume.

A real gem for music geeks.

We are the Robots – Song by Kraftwerk

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Here’s a classic 1978 hit, We are Robots a song sung by the German band Kraftwerk.

The song is over 30 years old but it hasn’t aged at all.

It’s great practice with these German humanoids who sing ;-)
