Robots that climb walls

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Students have developed robots that climb walls in the laboratory of Dr. Amir Shapiro in the Mechanical Engineering department at the Ben Gurion University of Negev in Israel.

The four climbing robot prototypes are shown in the following order:

1. a robot with magnetic wheels capable of climbing on ferromagnetic surfaces (see the definition for Ferromagnetism in Wikipedia). Possible use: on ships or steel bridges.

2. The second concept is a robotic snail that climbs non-metallic surfaces using melted glue. Just like a snail, this specimen leaves traces behind it.

3. The third prototype uses 3M adhesive wheels to climb a wall (a school blackboard is shown here) and can also climb glass surfaces.

4. The last one is a robot with 4 limbs, able to climb rough surfaces (exterior walls, wood, stone etc.). It has 12 fishing hooks on each of its legs (48 total) and can climb like a cat.

Gitex Robot: a very realistic singing and dancing giant monster

Friday, January 29th, 2010

When one looks at this video for the first time, an immediate question always comes to mind: Is there a human being inside?

Well, actually it is not clear, but is possible… Whoever truly knows the answer, please explain it in the comments.

The giant Gitex robot demands respect with its size, its appearance, and its rapid movement.

If you happen to see it entering your house, I think anyone would be scared, or think that it is something out of the Terminator or the Robocop movie.

Although it sings, dances, and charms the ladies in the room, when it speaks in its normal voice, it frightens all children and babies :-)

This huge robotic “thingy” manufactured by Panasonic was displayed at the Dubai World Trade in late 2009.

A T800 Terminator at a Swiss tattoo parlor

T800 Terminator

A T800 Terminator took over a tattoo parlor in Switzerland (Ethno Tattoo).

This T800 is one of the only replicas in the world to be metal-built, others were resin.

Its creator applied the drawings used in the movie, and the Terminator was built to the last detail.

This is something that makes a merchant stand out and attract – or discourage customers.

Bioloid: an Autonomous Climbing Robot

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Bioloid Climbing Robot

The Bioloid is an autonomous robot capable of climbing a wall.

Notice the size accuracy: it is not a sequence that the robot has learned by heart, but a fully autonomous and improvised development according to the data and the supports that it sees in front of it. The robot is based on the X-Y positions of its attachments.

Future versions of this prototype will include a complete visual system with video camera.

This is a university project by Marco Wickrath (Technical University of Dortmund in Germany in collaboration with the University of Manitoba in Canada.
