Hexapod Crab Robot

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The Japanese are really starting to like hexapod robots, seen more and more in robotics contests.

Its looks like manufacturers are progressively leaving bipeds behind for “multi-leg” types.

Below is Igaa a hexapod crab (i.e. with 6 legs) who is quite agile against Iketomu BT-L5.

First Lego League

Voix du Nord reports that teacher Olivier Cassez is going to participate in the Open International Championship in Taiwan with 8 of his students.

This is the First Lego League which gathers participants from 60 countries and is an international contest where the aim is to present useful and cutting edge robots, using Lego Mindstorms pieces. The contest is open to teenagers accompanied by their teachers.

The teacher’s team is the two time French champion but this time, they are involved in a competition of international scale.

We wish them good luck and that they come back with the “gold medal” from their Olympics!

Olivier Cassez is a multidisciplinary as well as mechanical engineering teacher at Jean-Prouvé de Lomme high school.

An ultra-fast laboratory robot mouse

Friday, February 5th, 2010

The 30th competition of robotic laboratory rats took place in Japan at Micromouse 2009.

A rat or mouse capable of finding their way in a maze is impressive, but what you are about to see in this video has – kind of – nothing to do with speed.

Incredible!

Initially, the mouse assesses and scans the terrain and the obstacles and then it takes off.

At full speed, it starts from point A to reach point B in record time and without ever touching the edges of the maze.

A 4.7 second time record:

The U1K Robot Fighters

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

The new generation of bolts-and-computer-chip fighter is born.

In the future, fighter robots may replace men in extreme fighting, wrestling or boxing.

It is amazing how they move, fight and fall at all times and with so much ease. Below, the lighter than 1 kg category, also known as U1K.

A great moment of pure pleasure for robotics and remote controlled game fans.

The U1K was organized by RT-Corp in Tokyo, on January 9: www.rt-shop.sakura.ne.jp/rt-shop/

A similar competition at the Robogames, Robo-One and Kondo.

The Robots are coming (First Robotics Competition)

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The First Robotics Competition is an international robotics event organized by FIRST for High School students with their mentors.

Students come from all corners of the globe, mainly from Brazil, Canada, the Netherlands, Israel, the United States, United Kingdom, and Mexico.

The goal is to build autonomous mobile robots within 6 weeks to compete in pre-defined tasks; the robots change every year.

These robots can weigh up to 120 pounds (55 kg).

Each team consists of 4 to 100 people.

The 2010 First Robotics Competition is called the Breakaway, and takes place in Atlanta, USA. This year is a Soccer tournament with different levels of difficulty.

2010 Robotics Trophies

Planet-Science’s Robotics Trophies have been held annually in France since 1993 (except in 2006 when they were held in Belgium).

Participants are aged between 7 and 18 years, in teams of two (driver and co-driver), and their mission is to build wire-controlled play robots.

The focus and learning revolve around mechanics, electricity, computers and electronics.

The theme for 2010 is the world in all its forms.

The teams have 6 months to prepare and they compete in tournaments in which they must perform specific actions, focusing on the technology used and the skill of the pilot.

Important Dates:

Regional Meetings:

- February 27, 2010: at the Charlie Chaplin center in Vaulx-en-Velin, a meeting organized by Planète Sciences Rhone-Alpes, February 27-28, 2010: in Hirson, a meeting organized by Planète Sciences Picardie and PASS – March 6, 2010: at the Cité de l’Espace in Toulouse, a meeting organized by Planète Sciences Midi-Pyrenees – March 6, 2010: at the ESJ Ollioules, a meeting organized by Planète Sciences Méditerranée – March 20, 2010: at the Parc des Exposition d’Angers (exhibition park of Angers), a meeting organized by Planète Sciences Sarthe – March 20, 2010: in Rennes, a meeting organized by Planète Sciences Britain – No specific date yet for the Paris region, but a meeting will take place organized by Planète Sciences, Ile-de-France

The National Finals of the Robotics Trophies will be held at the Amiens Coliseum on April 4 and 3, 2010. The Eurobot Junior Robotics Trophies European Finals will take place at the Athénée Royal Jean Rey de Couvin in Belgium (20 km from the French border), on May 29 and 30, 2010.
