The LineScout Power Line Inspection Robot Is The Most Current There Is

Friday, August 13th, 2010
LineScout, the Power Line Inspection Robot

LineScout, the Power Line Inspection Robot

Hydro-Québec Research Institute (IREQ) developed and BC Transmission Corporation have developed the new LineScout, a Power Line Inspection Robot. This nifty robot is able to work on the power lines while they are operating (at very high tension). It has posses a vast array of cameras and tools that allow the remote operators to inspect and conduct (albeit minor) repairs on the power lines without needing to put the off-service or risking their lives.

This innovative concept has even won the two institutions an Edison Award. See the video below  for further information about the robot operation and features.

C.R.A.B. Like a CGI ED 209

ED 209 from RoboCop

ED 209 from RoboCop

If the title caught your attention it is because you are a real robot geek! There seems to be a pattern when humans envision robotic law enforcement… and it almost always ends in rampage and a killing spree.

The videos below by Jamie Martin explore this (most likely) inevitable future. The C.R.A.B. robot depicted remind us very much of the ED 209 form RoboCop.

Police robot prototype

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

police-car-robot

Here’s a terminator police robot that could scare those who want to speed off and try to escape the police.

For the moment, it’s just an idea.

This auto-moto is halfway between Robocop and a beetle.

The idea: unmanned inside (so safer), it chases fugitives.

It’s an idea of Carl Archambault’s, via ecofriend.

The robot that lights fireworks

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

How do you use a LEGO Mindstorms NXT to set off fireworks safely?

This video shows you how.

The robot is a MINDSTORMS NXT kit which uses two light sensors, one for detecting the lighting of a firework.

The prototype also uses an ultrasonic sensor to adjust the height of the lighter in comparison to the wick.

Two motors operate to place the Mindstorms and a third is used for the arm of the lighter.

Summer is fireworks season and it’s a good idea to tinker with such a machine to ensure the safety of powdermen.

Military robots exhibited in Germany

Friday, May 21st, 2010

This week Germany has hosted an exhibition devoted to demonstrations of military robots .

The Expo brought together European robotics researchers for the 2010 edition of the ELROB (European Trial of UGVs).

These kinds of robots are in demand, especially for perilous and dangerous missions for soldiers in difficult war zones such as Afaghanistan.

The rapid technological advances have enabled the development of new prototypes even more sophisticated and prepared for war.

Here’s the video as reported by the Associated Press:

RoboSwift the surveillance bird

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Roboswift

RoboSwift is a robotic bird with wings that can move like a real bird (i.e. can flap) and folds its feathers backwards like a swift.

This prototype has been invented by researchers at the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.

This robot was originally designed for (and with) the Dutch police which can send it to monitor risk zones or individuals without being noticed.

The fact that the robot looks and moves naturally gives it absolute discretion.

Watch the video below; the end is rather amusing: “Sorry, no tree found” : -))

The police officer robot: a reality in 2025?

Monday, April 5th, 2010

In the United States, the Pentagon via DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) plans to be in a position to create police officer robots between now and 2025, capable of patrolling our streets and protecting citizens.

They would be able to take decisions by themselves, impose the law by force and use weapons.

In South Korea, a similar project is also under consideration and could emerge even sooner.

These humanoid police officer robots would act autonomously or could be operated at a distance by remote control.

Watch a pretty convincing video demonstration produced last year by CGI studios:

Fireguard the concept of a firefighter robot

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Fireguard

The concept of Fireguard, a firefighter robot, was conceived by a German designer.

Fireguard is not going to replace humans by extinguishing fires, but it will check out places where fires are.

Equipped with a video camera on its head, it is controlled at a distance by firefighters who can assess the situation. It’s the same principle as the robots that defuse bombs.

Its special wheels and rotatable body means this robot can work on practically any terrain.

Fireguard looks like a scorpion, don’t you think?
