New ASIMO from Honda Robotics Running

Honda Robotics released a new version of ASIMO which is much faster and much more agile than its predecessors. The new ASIMO, is capable of running much faster, has dexterous hands and can even jump on one foot. This robot is clearly the most advanced humanoid there is.

Here are the specs of the new ASIMO and a summary of its new capabilities:

  1. Height: 130 centimeters (4 feet 3 inches)
  2. Weight: 48 kilograms (106 pounds), decreased 6 kg from previous model
  3. Degrees of freedom: 57 DOF total, increase of 23 DOF from previous model
  4. Running speed: 9 km/h (5.6 miles per hour), compared to 6 km/h for previous model

As shown in the video, ASIMO has new dexterous hands which allows him to express how much he likes Heavy Metal as seen in the picture above (actually he is hand-signing “I Love You”). No wonder the little humanoid is so popular with the ladies, see picture below.

Asimo at EPFL in Switzerland

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

The humanoid robot, Asimo, by Honda has stopped by the federal polytechnic school of Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.

A member of the audience has reported videos of the Objectif Sciences event (open day at EPFL) which took place on May 29 and 30.

You can also see Asimo there center stage walking and interacting with the humans.

Its most impressive performance is definitely its dance choreography.

Asimo Widget

Honda has just developed a little fun gadget to put on your desktop: the Asimo Widget.

This little robotic widget is placed on your computer desktop and displays the latest news from Honda as well as provides a memo function for taking notes.

You also see Asimo walking around on your screen, it’s the fun part of this widget.

And a search field offers you the possibility of searching the web via Google Search.

It’s a great gadget idea for robotics geeks by Honda.

Asimo P4 by Honda

Asimo P4

Honda has just unveiled its new model of the Asimo humanoid robot: the P4.

Careful though, it’s not a new version in the literal sense since this model is based on one developed in 2000.

The P4 measures 1.60 m in height like the P3 but it has lost weight: from 130 kg to 80 kg.

Asimo P4 has 34 degrees of freedom (4 more than the P3).

This version of Asimo would find it easier to walk, move and dance than previous versions.

Dorosseru and Honda Asimo at the Miraikan Museum

Monday, February 1st, 2010

The National Museum of Sciences and Innovation, Miraikan in Japan, displays several models created by Honda robots.

It is a meeting-point for the whole family. Too bad that Japan is not closer to us :-)

You will see mainly the highly publicized Asimo in several different positions including a very special one where the humanoid holds a firearm (OMG!) :

But one of the attractions of this museum is also Dorosseru, the very pretty lady robot princess:

Today, Honda unveiled its 6th short film of the Dream the Impossible series on robots, at the Sundance Film Festival (in Torrance, California).

Living With Robots lasts 8 min 34 seconds and you can watch it right here on the RobotShop blog.

A total immersion into the world of Honda and interviews with engineers and developers.

This new film pays particular attention to robotics mobility through the history of ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility), one of the most advanced humanoid robots in the world.

You will also be able to see the company’s progress in technologies associated with bipeds and exoskeleton prototypes.

A short film by Joe Berlinger with the producers of @radical.media.
