Engineers Just Want to Have Fun, Robocoaster Goes F1

Engineers and researchers form the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, in Tübingen, Germany and making some interesting  ”scientific research” about the way humans perceive motion by riding a giant industrial robot arm from Kuka while playing video games.  As depicted in the video below, the system uses a Robocoaster, a modified six-axis Kuka KR 500 that can lift up to 500 kg usually found in amusement parks.

Kuka Youbot

The manufacturer of the Kuka industrial robotic arm has unveiled a mobile platform with open interfaces and open source software.

It’s a first: a manufacturer of industrial robots heading towards consumer robotics.

The arm has a multidirectional mobile platform, a hand with 5 degrees of freedom and two fingers for gripping.

KUKA, a giant in industrial robotics wants to take a step forward in education and research.

The Hamamatsu Science Museum robots

The Hamamatsu Science Museum in Japan has a few different robots which entertain the visitors.

First there’s the little blue and green robot which acts as your talking guide in the museum.

It can recharge by itself:

Then there’s the humanoid robot at the entrance.

Given its size and Terminator arms, it’s best not to try to get away with not paying, a piece of advice :-)

ICRA 2010: from the 3rd to the 8th of May in Alaska

ICRA

This year, the International Confrence on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) will take place in Anchorage, Alaska, from May 3rd to 8th 2010.

Major players in robotics, such as iRobot, Aldebaran Robotics, Boston Dynamics, Gostai, Willow Garage and Kuka will be present.

The theme of the 2010 ICRA is “50 years of robotics“.

Research institutes such as MIT or Stanford will also be present.

ICRA will also count on the participation of the DARPA (the Agency of the United States Department of Defense).

The conference is organized by IEEE-Ras, a world famous organization. IEEE defines itself as the largest association in the world for the advancement of technology.
