Introducing the Calliope iRobot Create Netbook Development Platform. It is a Tekkotsu-based robot designed by Carnegie Mellon University's Tekkotsu Lab. Tekkotsu means 'iron bones' in Japanese, often used in the context of buildings' structural framework. It consists of an Asus Eee PC 1000-series netbook mounted on an iRobot Create 4400. The Tekkotsu software package aims to give you a base structure upon which to build–handling routine tasks so that you can focus on higher level programming. Written in industry-standard C++ allows you to get started quickly and to smoothly delve deeper into the API to customize functionality as needed.

Key features of Tekkotsu are visual processing, localization, forward and inverse kinematics solvers, remote monitoring and teleoperation tools, and real-time motion control. A large library of tutorials and demo behaviors are included to help you get started, with extensive reference documentation when you have specific questions. Tekkotsu is an open source, free LGPL-licensed software project that builds on several third party libraries, such as NEWMAT (matrix operations), libjpeg, libpng, libxml2, and zlib. Using an object-oriented and event-passing architecture, it makes full use of the template and inheritance features of C++.

The iRobot Create is a complete robot development kit that allows you to program new robot behaviors without having to worry about mechanical assembly and low-level code. iRobot Create's Open Interface (OI) provides you with a set of commands, such as 'drive' commands, demo commands, song commands and sensor commands, that encourage your own inventiveness. With iRobot Create, you can develop new behaviors and add third party electronics, all without having to
worry about mechanical robustness or low-level control.
