Robot vacuums have now been proven as effective as conventional vacuum cleaners and leave your floors clean every day. Its features are similar to a regular upright vacuum, only better. The robotic vacuum has accessories such as main brushes, side brushes, high efficiency filters ensuring the best operation possible.
Ease of Use
Robot vacuums are of course automatic and will work unattended. All models can be started manually very easily at the touch of a button and will start cleaning without supervision. Turn it on, let it vacuum and come back and find your home clean. Most robot vacuums can be scheduled to clean at the day and time that you want it to clean. They can be scheduled easily either using the robots control menu, the robots docking station or even a remote control. Coming back to a clean home has never been easier.

Robot vacuums are very compact and will not take much space in your home. They are usually a maximum of 35cm in diameter by 10cm high and weigh approximately 3 to 4 kg. Most robot vacuums are round in shape but, some models have a square front. They can all go under most furniture and reach hard to reach places even some that conventional vacuums can’t. So there’s no need to move sofas, stools, and low-set tables. They are shaped so they can go around furniture, legs and wall corners effectively, cleaning as it goes. They also feature a bumper to absorb possible collision with a solid object along its way.
Robot vacuums use intelligent programming and various sensors in order to make sure rooms are cleaned entirely and efficiently. They include intelligent accessories such as docking stations to re dock and charge once the cleaning is complete and accessories to create virtual walls or barriers that robot vacuums will not cross.
What Do Robot Vacuums Look Like?
Most robot vacuum cleaners like the iRobot Roomba are round shaped and stand at about 10cm high and roughly 35cm in diameter. Other robot vacuums such as the Neato have a square front to be able to clean deep into corners without needing a side brush.
On the top part of the unit you will find the control panel. Some have one or two buttons, others many and others even have an LCD screen.

Robot Vacuums also house a dust bin and filter. The dust bin can usually be found at the top or back or the robot and can easily be emptied after every few cleaning cycles.
How Do Robot Vacuums Work?
Unlike your conventional vacuum cleaner, robot vacuums are smart and autonomous. A robotic vacuum performs two essential functions - navigation and cleaning. Navigation of the robotic vacuum cleaner is controlled by the robots motherboard also known as the brain and various sensors. With technology advancements, robot manufacturers have developed exclusive programming. This programming ensures minimum human input in executing robotic vacuum operations.
A robot vacuum cleaner will vacuum your hard floors and carpets and retain the picked-up dirt in a dirt bin that can easily be emptied out. Some models even empty the dust bin automatically when the robot returns to it’s docking station after cleaning. A filter at the input of the dust bin allows the fine dust to be retained and not be released into the ambient air. Some robot vacuums include a HEPA filter to eliminate allergens as well as retain finer debris.
When it has finished cleaning, the robot vacuum cleaner settles on its docking station and speaks or beeps to inform you that it is done cleaning.
Models with docking stations, initially sit quietly on the docking station recharging their batteries in between cleaning cycles. Most models with docking station can also be scheduled to clean at the day and time that you want it to clean. A simple button sequence allows you to set your preferred schedule. Then on the scheduled days and time, the robot vacuum cleaner powers out of the station to work. It will not return until the cleaning cycle is complete or its battery runs low. In the event of a battery run-down prior to completing the cleaning cycle, the robot will abort the cleaning cycle and find its way back to the docking station. Some models will return to where they left off to complete cleaning if it was not completed during the first cleaning cycle.
How do Robot Vacuums Travel And Technology Used?
No need to sit around while your robot vacuum performs a cleaning cycle since they will clean your floors completely usually using one of two methods. Manufacturers have not ceased to develop new intelligence and technology for the navigation of robot vacuums. All robot vacuum cleaning methods were proven to be efficient, reliable and useful. Although, at the moment there are two more common navigation modes available depending on the brand.
Most robot vacuums navigate using an integrated technology providing them with 4 to 5 cleaning modes. Without being random, they perform criss cross patterns, spirals and follow walls in order to clean rooms fully. With their integrated touch and distance sensors, they are able to navigate around walls and furniture. They are intelligent in their own way by cleaning most areas two or three times. Since robot vacuums are suggested to be used everyday, this method is suitable for most robot vacuums.
More advanced robotic vacuums will map the area to clean with an integrated laser or camera. Either by viewing the objects in front of it’s path or by viewing the pattern of a room with a camera facing the ceiling. These robots then can plan the most efficient course to vacuum your home and can systematically clean entire rooms in straight lines before moving on to the next. These robots are very methodical much like when a human cleans their floors.
All robot vacuums on the market today are equipped with essential to high technology functions both for safety, efficiency and ease of use. Here are features that are common to mostly all robot vacuums and features that are uncommon and present on only a certain brand of robot vacuums.
• Docks and recharges: Most robot vacuums return to its docking station to recharge in order for them to be ready for their next cleaning cycle.
• Plastic dust bin: Made for easy cleaning and emptying
• Brushes: Most robots have at least 1 brush, including side brushes to clean along walls and hard to reach places and main brushes to pick up large debris.
• Sensors: Robot vacuums are equipped with sensors that detect cliffs, and obstacles. This security allows you to let the robot work alone even when you're not home.
• Cleans hard floors and carpets: Most robot vacuums can clean hard floors as well as low pile carpets. They can generally move from one to the other without difficulty. Only some robot vacuums are recommended for higher pile carpets although, shaggy type rugs are to avoid since they tend to be too long.
• Cleans on schedule: Can be preset or programmed to clean at the day and time that you want it to clean.
• Remote control: Makes initiating a cleaning, scheduling and controlling robot vacuums easy. Using radio frequency technology or infrared, you can now control robot vacuums from a few feet away to almost any room in your house.
• Knows when in error mode: Most robot vacuums automatically stop when an error occurs or the robot needs cleaning.
• Virtual walls: Some virtual walls are physical objects that are a few cm in size and emit an infrared beam that the robot vacuum will not cross. Other robot vacuums have magnetic strips that you can lay down on the floor and around objects to keep the robot away from rooms and objects that you do not want to clean.
• Dirt detecting sensors: Some robots use an acoustic sensor to find dirtier areas. Once these areas are detected the robot concentrates more time on them for optimized cleaning.
• Automatic dirt bin emptying: A nice feature to save time maintaining your robot vacuum is automatic emptying of the dust bin. With this feature, every time the robot returns to the docking station, a powerful vacuuming unit will vacuum up the dust bin. These compartments are usually much larger and will not need to be emptied frequently.

Maintenance is an important step for keeping your robot vacuum cleaning at peak performance. Robotic vacuums were developed to save time and manufacturers must take this into consideration when manufacturing robot vacuums. Maintenance must therefore be easy and require very little investment for the user.
Firstly, robot vacuums are bagless and are equipped with a rigid plastic dust bin that can be emptied and cleaned very easily.
At the entry of the robots dust bin, you will find a filter that prevents dust and dirt from being exhausted from the robots vacuum out into the open air. The filter must be cleaned and the bin emptied after every 3-5 cycles depending on the amount of dirt the robot picks up. This is recommended in order to maintain optimum suction power which ensures efficient cleaning of the robot vacuum. The filter should however be changed every 3 to 6 months depending on the frequency the robot is used. A clean and unworn filter ensures that the robot will clean at peak performance and will not cause any damage to the robots vacuum system.
HEPA filters (High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters) have the advantage of being washable and reusable. Their lifetime is therefore improved compared to standard filters. HEPA filters are high performance filters that imprison debris that is less than 0.3 micron. These filters are especially recommended for people sensitive to allergens.
The main brushes found under the robot and the side brush should be cleaned regularly with a cleaning tool supplied with the robot vacuum cleaner. This prevents debris from accumulating and causing a malfunction of the robot.
The right and left drive wheels as well as the castor wheels should also be checked for debris and maintained regularly.

Neato's vacuuming robot is FAR superior to iRobot's Roomba, which is really just a sweeper. Looks like Neato's REALLY improved this unit. We have cleaners come on a weekly basis and the house is kept pretty clean between visits except for dog hair - we have a German Shepherd. All floors are ceramic or hardwood). The bot does a surprisingly good job at navigating around a very large central island then going into the dining room then coming back thru the kitchen and finding its way out to the foyer. It remembers what it has done and then goes home to charge itself. We have two sunken areas in hardwood (one with a cow hide and one with a persian carpet) - I just put it down and push start and it does these areas as well and again goes back to where it starts although it cant climb up to its charger. It handles the change in surface without problem. Not just smart but thorough. As long as it keeps working it is perfect.(Posted on 7/24/14)
