The CropCam Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a revolutionary mini agriculture plane that will change the way you manage your crops, fields or any part of your agricultural operation, by providing high resolution GPS based digital images for precision agriculture. The CropCam Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) offers images on demand and is an inexpensive alternative to satellite or flying an airplane over a field. It can provide images for agriculture, forestry, oil & gas, surveys, mapping, land management drainage, environmental, and a multitude of other uses. The CropCam is highly efficient and user friendly for the commercial market. It is a radio control (RC) glider plane. Available in electric, the CropCam will also work with a RC transmitter for manual control of the plane.

The CropCam utilizes an autopilot for navigation and control of the camera, for everything else it is RC parts (wings, servos, propellers, glow fuel or batteries) purchased locally. This makes the CropCam parts practical and accessible worldwide. Furthermore, the CropCam is easy to use, with minimal training required, and locally available replacement RC parts.

The average speed of the CropCam Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is 60 km/h. The CropCam can fly in winds up to 30 km/h. The calmer the days, the better your images will be. The CropCam is an RC airframe that requires grass, soft crops or dry mud. Hard surfaces such as stubble, trees and concrete are not suitable and cause damage to the fuselage. The CropCam can fly in the winter and snow is perfect for landing. With respect to temperature the CropCam should not be flown in temperatures colder than -20 celsius. Please note, CropCam can fly, but you may have problems with the camera operating at -20 celsius.

Environmental Monitoring

The CropCam provides flexibility and economic deployment that allows for a regular schedule of imagery to be acquired. This opens the door to many land and water environmental monitoring applications which were previously not economically viable.

Forestry

High resolution imagery gathered from the CropCam will allow forest companies and private land owners to assess their woodlots. This includes specie identification and extent as well as volume calculations. More informed and accurate forest cutblock boundary will help ensure these resources stay healthy for future generations.

How it works

Simply stand at one corner of your field and hand launch the 6 pound CropCam plane. The powerful miniature autopilot and Trimble GPS, does the rest navigating in a pattern over the field. Both the CropCam and the camera perform automatically to take GPS based digital imagery. After the flight, the CropCam will land in the spot you started from. A handheld GPS unit is highly recommended to determine your starting location.

RC Control

The CropCam is equipped with RC override allowing the Safety Pilot to manually take control of plane. The RC control is switched by flicking Channel 5 switch on your RC transmitter and is available anytime.  For export, warranty and frequency purposes, the RC Transmitter and receiver are not included

Video (camera not included)

The video is pulled directly off a Pentax camera (sold separately) and sent to a base receiver where the laptop and/or monitor can pickup the signal. The suggested camera gives a 640x480 video image at 30 fps and the system has a usable range up to and beyond 1 mile. The transmitter is quite small and light, it adds maybe an ounce to the airplane, the power in can be taken from the autopilot LIPO, so no extra battery is needed. Power consumption is only 100 MA every 10 minutes. A simple Velcro attachment to the bottom of the wing is all that's needed for mounting. A few more leads are used to attach to the camera and for power. It is quite handy in that you can view and record a video image, and then take a full size picture any time using the picture button in horizon when something good comes into view.

Benefits

Precision agriculture has become a buzz word for the agriculture industry and has received growing attention. In addition to GPS mapping, auto steer and variable rate spray, GPS aerial images are being used for crop analysis such as plague scouting, disease scouting and plant development. Traditional aerial images provided by satellite, manned aircraft or stock photography are often expensive, difficult to obtain or outdated. The CropCam provides GPS based digital images on demand throughout the growing season. The images obtained through the CropCam will allow producers to detect, locate, and better assess the actions required to correct the problem.

Some images are displayed above which was captured by this CropCam Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
