Build Your Own Johnny-Five?
Posted on September 30th, 2005 in Latest News
Rumor has it that Eric Allard, the original designer of Johnny-Five, the star of everyone’s favorite robot movie, Short Circuit, may be planning on releasing blueprints and selling parts to build your own!
The folks at Johnny-Five.com write:
“It’s not for sure, but Eric Allard, the man who originally built Johnny Five,
is considering reproducing the toys and creating blueprints of the big guy for fans.
It will only happen if there is enough support for it.”
For the uninitiated, Wikipedia has a good entry on our silicon pal.
Update: Commenter Paul pointed us to what looks like the official site for the group doing the blueprints for Johnny-Five.

If they sold RC Johnny 5′s in the shops I would definitely buy one – the Short Circuit movies were what made me decide I wanted to work in film.

Hello who ever may be reading these posts,
I’ve been putting in posts for years on the subject of getting hold of Johnny 5 blueprints. The movies were sensational when I was a kid and still are today.
I became a Mechatronis Engineer largely because Johnny 5 kept me going. No matter how much the University tried to convince us all that Electronics and Mechanics were actually rather boring, Johnny 5 was one of the things that kept me going, not letting them convince me of this judgment. Electronic and Mechanical engineering are exciting fields don’t ever let anyone tell you other wise.
I would certainly love even the dimensions and outlays of the puppet as Johnny 5 is simply a fantastic robot if it were brought to life. 2 arms with tri-finger manipulators, built in tool system, dual tri tank tracks for mobility. Put in sonic and radar tracking, 2 camera systems. Even with a basic neural network and some user accesible remote controlled features it would be fantastic.
Johnny 5 also gives you an appreciation for robotics. I mean let’s face it anyone who builds robots as a hobby will instantly see $$$ signs flashing with the gear that would go into one of these robots. What I find exciting today is that the entire setup would be totally doable(even for creating a 3 stooges automated setup like Johnny 5 did). I’d probably put in a high intensity laser pointer instead of an actual high intensity impact laser though (wouldn’t want Johnny 5 replica’s having a bad name).
Just take a look at the NXT leggo robot, it’s got so much Johnny 5 in there I’m surprised a law suit wasn’t filed and don’t even talk to me about Wallie. Yeah I confess I loved the show but there was no way he was out cooling Johnny 5 and everyone knows he’s a direct rip off of the real robot. What trumps Wallie is that Johnny was a real life puppet, not an animation and that makes him 1000 times more spectacular. In fact. WHEN IS THE NEW JOHNNY 5 MOVIE COMMING OUT?? I would even just love to see him working on the farm were he retired to or did he??? (a gold plated robot with a US citizenship is pretty hard to miss, were on Earth did he go??).
To conclude, YES PLEASE DO release Johnny 5 replica’s in some form, I’m certain that Johnny would be flattered.
Here’s to keeping Number 5 ‘ALIVE!!!’.

He just loves Johnny 5!!!!!!!!!!!

I am really interested in the Nova robots and would like to build one! I just wish I could get more information about them. And as Sean said what ever happened to those robots?!!? They couldn’t have just scrapped them!

i am a person who likes dedicating my life in making very powerful robotic engineering. i try to make any type of robot with little parts of my robotic kits. i even try 2 program so i can try 2 make an intelligent robotic system which can do a lot of things.

Hello everyone,
I am Leo from Argentina, and I am posting this comment because I want you know that I am other guy who want you re-start manufacturing the original Johnny Five toy shown on Short Circuit 2.
I have been looking for all over the internet, and found nothing. Please, let us to know if you are going to make them again and if there is possible to purchase at least on ebay.
Thanks in advance.

January 8th, 2012 at 17:29
just stumbled upon this site after watching this classic film – hadnt watched it for years and it was on tv , i forgot how great it is – any news on those blueprints or even whole replicas as i really really want one !!!!!!!
January 17th, 2012 at 14:21
That would be great if blueprints were to be released, or at least maybe a kit of parts of the more harder to make bits.
It was a great film, and nothing has matched since its release.
Eric Allard has my full support for such plans and i would be willing to help out as i have a history / background in such things
regards
Al

I recently bought an older travel trailer and when you open up the rock guard, it looks like the eyebrows of Johnny 5. The trailer is now named the same and it would be great if a Johnny 5 toy were to be made. I would buy one in a heartbeat!
May 21st, 2012 at 00:26
It’s been 7 years since this post, come on, how come the j’5 kits are not available yet ? The small j’5 remote control robot from short circuit 2 would be just great.
