GoRobotics February Robot Prize Giveaway!
Posted on February 20th, 2010 in Latest News, Misc, Site News
It’s time once again to give away some cool robot prizes to celebrate the 10th birthday of GoRobotics! If you didn’t win last month’s contest, have no fear, try again this month (and the month after!). We have some great robot prizes from our sponsors, SuperDroid Robots, Apress, and Pololu.
There are three ways of entering this month’s contest:
1. Simply comment on this post and tell us why you should win.
2. Follow GoRobotics on Twitter and leave a comment below telling us your Twitter username.
3. Retweet the following, “Enter @GoRobotics.net’s 10 Year Birthday Robot Giveaway http://wp.me/pgDpL-kM“. Leave a comment when you do.
YOU CAN DO ALL THREE (three comments) TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING!
Winners will be chosen at random. Three winners will be chosen and the first winners will get his/her choice of the prizes, second place gets second choice and third place gets whatever is left over! The contest ends FEBRUARY 28th, 2010 at 12AM EST. Comments are moderated to prevent spam. Your comment won’t show up till the moderator has approved it. Here are this month’s prizes:
1st Place Prize – Parallax Penguin Robot worth $200 USD.
The Penguin Robot by Parallax is a unique walking robot. Using two micro servos and precisely CNC machined parts, the robot can walk via a “tilt-stride action” gait. The cute little penguin comes equipped with a digital compass to track its heading, two photoresistors for sensing ambient light and light tracking, and two infrared emitters and a detector for obstacle avoidance. The Penguin Robot comes with a 7-segment LED indicator and a piezo buzzer for making sound. This is a great kit for getting into robotics, and you should set aside about 4 hours to assemble him.

2nd Place Prize – Build Your Own CNC Machine, Extreme NXT, and LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0: The Kings Treasure (donated by Apress) worth $75 USD
The second place prize is a whole raft of excellent books from Apress.
Build Your Own CNC Machine is the book to get you started in fabricating your own parts. CNC expert Patrick Hood-Daniel and best-selling author James Kelly team up to show you how to construct your very own CNC machine for about $500 – $1000 USD. Then they go on to show you how to use it, how to document your designs in Computer-Aided Design programs, and how to output your designs as specifications and tool paths that feed into the CNC machine, controlling it as it builds whatever parts your imagination can dream up.
Extreme NXT shows you how to advance the NXT with more than 45 exciting projects that include creating a cool magic wand that writes words in thin air, building a remotely guided vehicle, and constructing sophisticated robots that can sense color, light, temperature, and more. All projects are explained with easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions, so you’ll be able to create them successfully whether you’re a novice or an expert. This book also shows you how to expand the programming software and use the alternative language NXC.
LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0: The King’s Treasure is written for children ages 10 and up who want to learn to design, build, and operate robots using LEGO’s immensely popular MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 robotics kit. The book leads readers through a series of five projects centered on an engaging story line. It can be read by kids alone, or it can provide the spark for a wonderful series of parent/child activities.

3rd Place Prize – 2x 24V 195 RPM Gear Motors (donated by Super Droid Robots) worth $40 USD
These powerful 24V motors donated by Super Droid Robots will kick-start your next robot project. They are high-quality motors with steel gears (not cheap plastic), and used in Super Droid’s All-terrain robots. They use a 1:27 gear reduction and have an amazing 12 kgf-cm of torque. That means they could lift a 26 lb (12 kg) load using a 1 cm lever arm! They are rated for < 250 mA of drive current. Get started building something cool!
Update: Congratulations to our winners, Gerry Blondeaux, Dalton Caughell, and Matt Thouvenot.

Hi, and thanks for this opportunity.
I’m a student who just started diving into the deep world of robotics(almost 4 month), but i have had a passion for these things since i was a little kid. I’m glad to see that these sponsor are so nice! I will consider them for future online orders. I hope to win this so i can keep moving forward with my passion.

Hi! I’m starting to learn robotics as a part of my learning process in university and it will be really great to get some more stuff to experiment with! Thanks for the great opportunity!

Just a nerdy roboticist – that should be enough to be entered in the drawing
February 22nd, 2010 at 03:39
I would really like to win one of these prizes as I have a real passion for robotics. We don’t have a much of a robotics community in South Africa, which means that most robot kits have to be imported at great expense from overseas.
I believe that getting this kit will help me to get more people excited about robotics and generate the demand required for the hobby shops to start importing the kits themselves.

Hi,
I believe I should win because as a systems developer, I helped teach a company printer how to talk via twitter as part of an experiment. It’s intelligently witty.
(It stopped tweeting after we upgraded to a new printer).

I am obsessed with robots.
I would rather be building robots then going to work.
Only other thing I’d rather be doing when not working on my robot is playing with my son.
Thanks, GoRobotics.net

I want to get a PHD in Robotics or AI (assuming I can find a college that lets me work at least half time while I’m going) and want to experiment more with robotics while I’m still working on my Master’s

I am an electrical designer for a lighting and power distribution company and I have decided to learn the smaller electrical components. I purchased my first Arduino kit and I have started to work on it. I feel that being honored with this prize will accelerate my learning and provide me with a great base of which to design great things from. Thank you for offering such great prizes and taking the time to read this comment.
The best to whoever wins!

I have no children so I have to build my own robotic heirs.
February 24th, 2010 at 19:59
Wow! I can’t wait to win one of those prizes. My 7 and 9 year old kids would love to learn and play with the penguin, or with the Lego books. If I got third prize, I could definitely use those motors on a project. Thanks!!
February 24th, 2010 at 20:22
Hello,
I think I should win for three reasons:
1. I am currently subscribed to the go robotics news feed via google reader.
2. I am in a fairly new robotics club at the University of Washington and could really use parts and other help!
3. I love robots because they are the future and I want to be a part of it.

February 25th, 2010 at 09:13
i should win because i’m trying to home school my kids (because i want them to like learning and not just take standardized tests all of the time) and both of them love robots. it would be a learning experience for all of us!
February 25th, 2010 at 09:16
Can I win? I’ve been wanting to build a combination 3d scanner/3d printer using open source and freeware software, and construct the hardware myself. I want it to have a housing large enough to scan a human. Is that reason enough for you?
February 25th, 2010 at 09:20
Almost forgot: I tweeted the repost using the username lbprint (it’s our printer’s twitter account actually, ’cause I don’t have one for myself). Another reason to win: I’m one of those guys who likes to tinker in robotics. I’m already a competent programmer, but I always want to keep learning.
February 25th, 2010 at 10:36
Would love to win. Currently I’m unemployed and would love to win some goodies to help with my robotic quests until I get back on my feet and can afford to buy some things.
February 25th, 2010 at 10:55
I try my best to eat, drink, build robots and whatever else I do for the same reasons you do…
February 25th, 2010 at 15:02
IDK why i should win, but it would be nice as a high schoolar to experiment with such madness :p.
Penguins will one day take over
February 25th, 2010 at 18:11
Thanks for the opportunity! I read about this in the Parallax forums.
February 25th, 2010 at 18:26
Basically, if I win you will be helping me further expand my robot army(current size of 0 and counting) and it will bring delight to my son. Yet is this enough of a reason for you to know i am truly deserving of such a gift? Perhaps, perhaps not, so please allow me to elaborate on my plans:
1.) My robot army will assist me in laboratory work
2.) My robot army will protect my underground (hidden in a dormant volcano of course) laboratory from vengeful pirates and ninjas.
3.) Just be cause I lean towards being somewhat of a mad gentleman scientist does not mean that i do not have the good of humanity in mind, so, I will not use my robot army to enslave humanity in a matrixesque virtual world or bomb the hell outta the planet and then chase the last remnants of humanity across the cold dark blackness of space( ala cylons). Instead I will continue to plug away at some of the hardest problems facing humanity and the environment such as: The North Pacific Trash vortex cleanup; deep sea virtual navigation and exploration; flying penguins.

We should win this contest because Robotics & Beyond is a non-profit science and engineering summer camp, and we love to give our kids lots of options. Winning a penguin robot would be awesome (but honestly not as awesome as winning a swarm of robotic killer bees).
