Introducing the IRIS Light Weight WiFi Surveillance / Sensor Platform. It is intended to navigate outdoor environments and relay its video data to an operator or video server via its 802.11n wireless interface. This rugged, mobile system is designed to crawl over rocks, tolerate rain, snow and dust all the while protecting its sophisticated electronics. Quality, durability, and dependability are the core characteristics of this platform. Command and control is performed by a sunlight readable rugged touch sensitive laptop (sold separately). IRIS is a perfect research platform to develop sophisticated navigation or autonomous behaviors. It can also assist in exploring areas that are dangerous or hostile while performing real-time reconnaissance enabling your team to remain at a safe vantage point.
Edge Robotics’s IRIS robot is purposely architected and designed to address a light weight, backpack able audio/video surveillance system with the ability to rapidly add custom network accessible sensors. An Edge Robotics supplied Windows Graphical User Interface application, establishes a network connection with IRIS (via the supplied field access point accessory), presenting a unified control and observation interface of the robot. Novices to advanced operators will find the GUI’s motion control interface intuitive and easy to use.
The network camera system paid close attention to achieving a low latency video link of <90ms (glass to glass), 30 frames per second update rate, and video bandwidth management over the WiFi link. This translates into increased confidence the operator can see in real time what’s ahead of the robot.
Mechanically, IRIS’s chassis is constructed from high grade T6061 aircraft aluminums, anodized to protect it from corrosion. An O-ring sealed video dome along with gasketed batty, sonar sensor, body and rear cover provides an intrusion barrier protecting the electronics from dust and water (not IP rated). What sets IRIS apart from other wheeled or tracked machines is its custom suspension system. As IRIS traverses rough terrain the 4WD, 4 wheel independent suspension dampens road vibration such that the camera presents a more stable video image.
