The Pololu Step-Down Voltage Regulator 9V 2.9A D30V30F9 is a synchronous buck voltage regulator that efficiently converts higher input voltages up to 45 V to a lower, fixed 9 V output. This type of regulator, known as a switching regulator or DC-to-DC converter, is significantly more efficient than linear voltage regulators, particularly when there is a substantial difference between the input and output voltages. The device is capable of supporting continuous output currents ranging from 2 A to 3.5 A, with the exact current depending on the input and output voltages.
The regulator boasts a high degree of accuracy, maintaining the output voltage within 4% of the nominal value. It operates with an efficiency between 80% and 95%, which varies based on the input voltage, output voltage, and load. The device features a very low dropout voltage and operates at a switching frequency of approximately 700 kHz under heavy loads. To enhance efficiency under light loads, it includes a power-save mode that reduces the switching frequency. Additionally, the regulator has a low quiescent current.
For added functionality, the regulator is equipped with an enable input that allows for precise disconnection of the load, transitioning the regulator into a low-power state with minimal current draw. A "power good" output is also provided to indicate the regulators inability to maintain the output voltage. The device employs frequency spread spectrum operation to minimize peak EMI noise and includes under-voltage lockout protection. A soft-start feature is incorporated to limit inrush current and ensure a gradual ramp-up of output voltage. The regulator is also designed with integrated reverse-voltage protection, over-current and short-circuit protection, and over-temperature shutoff for enhanced safety.
The compact dimensions of the regulator facilitate easy integration into a variety of applications. It includes six connections: power good, enable, input voltage, output voltage, and two ground connections. The "power good" indicator is an open-drain output that signals when the output voltage deviates significantly from the nominal value. To utilize this feature, an external pull-up resistor is required. The regulator is enabled by default but can be put into a low-power sleep state by adjusting the voltage on the enable pin. An external pull-down resistor can be added to set a low-voltage cutoff, forming a voltage divider with the on-board pull-up resistor.
The regulators input voltage range allows for a variety of voltages to be applied, with the effective lower limit being the output voltage plus the regulators dropout voltage. The dropout voltage is dependent on the load and is detailed in the provided graphs. The regulated output voltage is provided at the VOUT connection.
