At the recent
International Toy Fair in New York, Wow Wee Toys
from Hong Kong introduced its RoboSapiens.
These 2-foot tall, plastic muscle men robots can do
almost anything.
"They push, pull, pick up, belch, move, walk, talk,
prance, kick, lift, dance and basically entertain,"
says creator Mark Tilden, a robot physicist who has
also developed advanced robit technology for NASA
and DARPA.
The secret of RoboSapiens is a philosophy called
BEAM, or Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics, and
Mechanics. Essentially the robots are designed with
simple control circuits instead of complex computer
chips and vast arrays of transistors. The simple
controls are connected to sensors and the mechanics
of the robot itself, in essence creating a machine
that mimics a biological counterpart.
