The SFE EL Escudo - EL Wire Arduino Shield drives the electroluminescent (EL) wire. The electroluminescent wire is neat, flexible cord that emits a florescent light. Some times it is referred to as 'cool neon' because the cord does not heat up. The kicker is that EL wire runs on high voltage AC - about 125V at 425Hz. While the EL wire requires very little power so normal transistors can't be used to turn on/off a string. That's why the EL Escudo is created, which uses TRIACs to control up to 8 channels.
Note: The inverter or the EL wire in the picture is unavailable for sell. Current it is recommended to use an inverter that takes the 3V DC and outputs the required 125V AC to drive the electroluminescent wire.
