The Sherline Rear Mount Cutoff Tool and Holder is designed to hold the cutoff blade upside down for use on the "back" side of the part. Because the part is rotating “up” on the back side, the tool must be flipped over in the holder so that the cutting tip faces downward. This special holder raises the tool to the amount needed to put the tip of the tool back to centerline height. This will save your time by allowing you to leave the cut-off tool holder mounted to the back side of the table while you use the regular toolpost in its normal position on the front side of the part.
Sherline also offers a conventional holder that is the proper height to hold the cutoff tool for use on the front side of the part (P/N 3002). With the use of a P/N 3016 cutoff tool rear mounting block, this holder can also be used on the back side of the part, but if that is going to be your primary intended use, the P/N 3018 holder will do the job easier and without the extra rear mounting block.

Note: Always use cutting oil when using the cut-off tool.
