If you are new to robotics and not sure what skills might be needed when purchasing products from different categories on this website, this section can give you a general idea of where to start. RobotShop has divided robotics into three main skill sets: mechanical, electrical and computer. Each skill is then subdivided into five difficulty levels. Note that many categories found on this website have a range of products pertaining to different skill levels. Note that these are only suggestions and are not intended to dissuade you from trying new things. Take a look at the suggested skills levels for each category.

Mechanical Skills
Level 1. No assembly or design skills required
Level 2. No prior experience/knowledge needed (all required information is included/explained)
Level 3. Increased dexterity required including the ability to work with normal hand tools
Level 4. Small and/or more advanced tools required for use and/or assembly
Level 5. Advanced mechanical skills and/or custom design required for use and/or integration
Programming (and Computer) Skills
Level 1. No programming necessary
Level 2. No prior experience/knowledge needed (all required information is included or taught)
Level 3. Basic concepts of programming required for use and/or proper functioning
Level 4. Advanced programming concepts required for use and/or integration
Level 5. Custom code and debugging skills required for use and/or integration
Electrical (including Wiring and Circuitry) Skills
Level 1. No electrical, wiring or circuitry design needed
Level 2. No prior experience/knowledge needed (all required information is included or taught)
Level 3. Knowledge of fundamental circuit design and terminology
Level 4. Advanced circuit design skills required for proper incorporation and use.
Level 5. Custom circuit design and wiring required for use and/or integration
