RobotShop Grand Tutorial Series: How To Make a Robot

This article lists some ideas for starting a simple robot. A good read for beginners. If you like this article, check out this. How to Build A Simple Robot, The Beetle Robot. This is the first of a series on how to build a simple robot. I will not be covering a lot of theory but instead will cover the nuts and bolts of building a robot. In this first installment I will cover some of the different options in building this robot.

Frame / Platform

  1. Wood: Depending on the size of your robot, plywood may be a good choice. Plywood is inexpensive (or free) and easy to work with using simple tools. You can get 1/4″ and 3/8″ plywood at Home Hardware, Home Improvement, Craft, or other home improvement / construction / hobby stores. You should also be able to find a lot of free wood locally. For example, a cabinet shop may throw out a lot of wood which is too small for their use but can be perfect for building a robot frame.
  2. Aluminum: This material is light weight and moderately easy to work can also be found at Home Hardware, Home Improvement, Craft, or hobby stores. You should always be very cautious when working with aluminum since the edges can be very sharp and should be sanded or filed to round them. The thicker the aluminum, the harder it is to form using hand tools.
  3. Plastics: Acrylic or Plexiglas are both easy to work and can also be found at many Hardware, Home Improvement, Craft, or Hobby stores. High-speed tools should not be used since they will melt the plastic. When cutting or drilling use low speeds.
  4. Re-purposed Materials: There are a lot of items around the house which can be turned into a robot frame. Take for example and old CD; These can be easy to find most people get them free in the mail from AOL or Earthlink. Instead of throwing them away you can use them to make a robot. They can be a little on the brittle side so go easy when you do any cutting or drilling.

  1. Continuous Rotation Servos: Did you know you can use servos to create reversible gear motors? Hobby shops will usually carry several sizes and brands of servos, as well as servos which are intended for continuous rotation. RobotShop even carries continuous rotation micro servos for <$5 each! If you choose normal servos, you will need to modify them for use there are many sites on the net with different methods. Servos already have all of the control circuitry built in and are easy to control; they have 3 wires which represent signal, Voltage, and ground. By pulsing the signal line you can go forward, stop, or backward. Servos are probably the easiest and cheapest way to make a propulsion system, but may not be the best for you.
  2. Gear motors: These are available from surplus stores or hobby shops, and can also be purchased online at stores like RobotShop. Gear motors will require additional control circuitry (normally an H-bridge) to allow forward and reverse motion and in some cases braking. Gear motors can provide great flexibility but usually  cost more compared to servos. Another source for gear motors is the toy section of your locale department store. What you want are the radio control toys which have “differential steering”, meaning they have a separate motor for each side (like a tank). To turn left, the motor on the right is signaled to go forward, while the left motor is turned off. You would do the opposite to turn right. The really good cars will turn right by going backward on the right motor and forward on the left this will allow a vehicle to almost turn on a dime. If you use gear motors you will need to devise a method to mount the wheels. I will be using gear motors from a toy for my example.

You can use wheels from old toys or you can buy wheels from a hobby shop.Foam or air-filled wheels for model aircraft are very easy to use. Note that often wheels from toys don’t have the right hole size, so you might have to do some customizing to get them to fit the motor. We adapted the wheels below to use the servo horn which came with the servo, and screwed it to a round wheel. Anything round can be used as a wheel – even a CD. You can add friction by stretching a rubber band around it. If your robot is small, don’t use a heavy wheel.

Batteries: You will need to decide what type of batteries to use. It can quickly become very expensive replacing non-rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries are really the best and the two two most common are NiMh and LiPo, though there are a number of different types to choose from. Electronic supply stores or Hobby shops are good places to look. You will not only need the batteries, but also the corresponding charger to charge them with.

Power supply: We will need a voltage regulator to drop the voltage from the battery to the 5 volts needed by the Microcontroller and other parts of the Brain for the robot. I will cover using two different voltage regulators; both are available FREE from National Semiconductor as samples. Each part has its good and bad points:

LM2825 Integrated Power Supply 1A DC-DC Converter is a complete switching power supply on a 24 pin DIP although a little large it requires no other components and has an efficiency of 80%. It does require at least 7 volts on the input but your batteries will last much longer than with a linear regulator.

LM2940 1A Low Dropout Regulator is a linear regulator in a TO 220 package it requires a couple of filter capacitors it is not as efficient as the LM2825 the big up point is it only requires 5.5 volts input to give a regulated 5 volts out.

“Brain” (a.k.a. “Microcontroller”)

For the brain, lets have a look at three different microcontrollers. I will admit I am biased when it comes to Basic Micro products as I have been using them for quit a while now and have always been very happy with the products and the support.

Atom: The Atom from Basic Micro is mostly compatible with the Basic Stamp but is much better, just to name a few of the things that set it above the Basic Stamp:

  • 8k of program space
  • IDE for programming
  • ICD for in circuit debugging lets you watch your program run
  • Floating point 32×32 bit math allows you to do real math. In case you don’t now it 5/2=2 to a Basic stamp but to the Atom 5/2=2.5
  • Interrupts (Up to 14 Sources) allow the Atom to stop where it is in a program and jump to another part of a program and when finished go back where it came from based on an event either internal or external.
  • Analogue to Digital Converter 4 10 bit analog to digital converters.

You can also buy the Atom28 28 Pin Interpreter Chip and build it up on a solderless bread board. The Basic Stamp from Parrallax is the old workhorse of the list has a well-established base of users and resources. Their educational resources are outstanding and nothing else really compares they have texts on Robotics, Earth Measurements, Industrial Control, and more.

PIC16F876: Programmed with Mbasic compiler also from Basic Micro version 5.0 is basically syntax compatible with the Atom most of the differences being pin designations with Mbasic you can use any one of a number of PIC Micros. I will provide a hex file of the program so that those who don’t want to buy a compiler at this time can still build the robot. I will have PIC16F876 chips programmed with a boot loader available to those who don’t have the ability to program pic’s you can download the ISP-PRO Programmer software V4.0.4.1 from Basic Micro to program the chips using the boot loader. If you purchase an ISP-PRO you can make all the boot loader chips you want for free.

Arduino: The “newest” contender on the market is Arduino; it’s open source and there are a LOT of different versions. It has become wildly popular with the robotics community and seems to be incredibly versatile. If you’re just getting started, it’s best to consider a complete board rather than re-making the circuit yourself (although this approach will save quite a bit of money).

Any of the microcontrollers above are a good choice, so which should you choose? I personally like the Atom and think it’s  superior to the Basic Stamp. Below are the prices for both the module and the development kit with module for each. Though you don’t have to buy the development kit it will make the project much simpler and really is money well spent.
Microcontroller Cost:
Basic Micro Atom Module $59.95
Atom Combo $129.95
Parallax BASIC Stamp 2 Module $49.00
BS2 Starter Kit with Board of Education $159.00
Arduino Uno $30

You could also just buy the module and a solderless breadboard or piece of perf board to build on instead of a development board and save a little money.

A third choice is to buy a Basic compiler; I will be using Basic Micro’s 2840 Combo w/ Pro Compiler. This development board lets you use either 28 or 40 pin PIC’s. I will be using the 5.0 beta Version of the Mbasic compiler which is still in beta the current version is 4.0.3 but the 5.0 should be available by the time we start the programming and updates are free.

Below are some things that make the Atom or Mbasic compiler a great choice: speed, Basic interrupts, and hardware pulse width modulation. The speed is obvious; you can never have too much processing speed. The second, Basic interrupts, we will use by connecting whiskers so that they generate an interrupt if something is bumped and the program will jump to a subroutine that will determine the correct course of action. After it completes that corrective action, it will continue the program from where it left off when the interrupt was generated.

The third, hardware pulse width modulation (HPWM), will really shine if you use gear motors instead of servos. With the Basic Stamp we will just be able to turn the motors on at one speed because we have other things to do. We will not be able to do variable speed. An Atom or a PIC16F876 each have two hardware pulse width modulation (PWM) channels which means we can set the pulse width and it continues until we change or stop it, which will give us variable speed.

For gear motors we can use the same HPWM command on the Atom to get a variable speed. The Basic stamp has a PWM command but it is done with software and while it does this, the Stamp cannot do anything else so it is not really user friendtly when it comes to variable speed motor control because we will not get smooth movement. Since this is the case, all we can do is turn the motor on full speed.

We will use infrared obstacle avoidance and bump sensors we will use the PNA4612M it is easy to use and inexpensive you could substitute the infrared detection module from Radio Shack. So what will you need to complete a robot as described in this series of articles? Material for a base a piece of material 8″ x 8″ will be more than enough.

To get started, you will need 2 motors; either servos modified for continuous rotation or gear motors. You could also hack a toy that has the motors and the wheels or even legs.

This is a toy called a “Battle Scarab” and is a good candidate for hacking if you want something with legs instead of wheels.

In short, you will need:

  • 2x motors + 2x wheels
  • Batteries and a holder (you should consider between 6 and 12 volts depending on what motors and regulator you use. Servos will run best at 6 volts).
  • A voltage regulator LM2825 or a LM2940
  • A microcontroller such as the ATOM, Basic Stamp, Arduino or a PIC
  • Infrared detection module (you will need one or more and we will go more into these later)
  • You will need a development board a solderless breadboard or perfboard to build on.
  • If you are using gear motors, you will also need a motor controller either a L293DNE Dual H Bridge with diodes or two 3952 Full-Bridge PWM Motor Drivers available from Alegro as ree samples.

  164. cbenson

We’re open to suggestions. Robotics is not the easiest field, but we’re trying hard to make it accessible to almost anyone who is patient and ready to learn.

  165. cbenson

You need to know the main components in a robot, then think of where you can get replacements. For example a robot needs a controll – perhaps an old computer? A robot needs gear motors – perhaps an old motorized toy? A robot needs a frame – any rigid container will do. A robot needs wires – use wires from any electronic device.

    Dear go,

I am very interested in robotics and I wish to build a robot myself for the first
time in my life because it will be amazing how I will own a robot.
The reason I did not make a robot is because I am only 10 yrs old.

    thank U,

  173. prakash

i wanted to make a robo car which go onto some black line mark…..

  174. sanju

  175. cbenson

We’re working on it. Robotics is a bit more complex than say, making a sculpture or artwork, and usually needs a bit of an investment (in time and money).

  176. krithika

i wanna make a robot….could u give me some tips?????

  177. cbenson

That’s what all the “how to” articles are intended to do. Is there something in particular you are looking for?

  178. Tlowe

Hey guys, i am 14 and i am trying to create a remote control transformer can… but i do not know to make the legs move. I have a design to make it have four legs, but i do not know how to make them move. i just want to know what i can do to make it walk.

  179. cbenson

Take a look at RB-Dag-61 on the RobotShop website to see how to create four legs. You should use servo motors, and would need a servo motor controller. You can create a walking robot with 8x RB-Dfr-124. We’d love to see the project when you finish.

  180. mackenzie

I need to make a robot but need money to do so so o y’all have any ideas to make them with home stuff

  181. cbenson

The hard part about making robots out of parts you find at home is that you first need to disassemble many products, find ways to connect the parts and then get it all up and running. Instead, you should invest in a microcontroller like the DFRduino for ~$25 and then take apart small electronics and toys.

  182. vishnu

i am a b tech student i want to make a simple robots which can find the small plastics wastes and cleaning please send me the procedure for making the robbot

  183. cbenson

Basically, a robot that can find plastic bottles when mixed with other materials? It’s not the robot that is the hard part – you need to find a sensor (or combination of sensors) to differentiate plastic from metals, glass, paper etc. Large companies use various procedures to do this and minimize the use of sensors.

  200. aadhav

I need information about the items for a automous robot

  201. anabel

Hi. I am 11 going on 12 and I am very serious with all things robotics. I wish to build a robot that can help with health and daily things but can understand (and fulfill) voice command. I would really like some tips, I will be doing smaller versions of this bot since I want it to be the size of an average human male. but I will most likely be using strong but light materials that are not to expensive and environment safe. please respond with tips of how to construct the bot and what materials to use. The robot would be preferably an automatonish as well
    Thank you.

    • Coleman Benson

@anabel If voice recognition is really important, we suggest focusing on that first, since it’s really not easy to do (quite a lot of programming required). If you want an easier / more fun start, consider a robot construction kit.

    • Coleman Benson

@Creately Many of the robots on wihch incorporate PCBs have schematics. You need only look for products and then see if they have a schematic under “Useful Links”.

  202. bluecloud

easy to make small robotic car with remote control to share ideas in my mail

  203. praveen

sir i want to make a simple robot for house work , so you can tell me about its requirments and give imformation ,principle etc plzs reply sir….

  204. Hrithik Agrawal

which type & size of batteries that i can use in line follower robot & how much power i should deliver to motors…

    • Brahim Daouas

@Hrithik The type, size and capacity of the batteries will depend on the robot you are using. You need to know how much current your motors draw (you can find this information in your motor’s datasheet) and how much the controller and other devices consume. Then, you can choose a battery/pack of batteries that can provide enough current to your robot at the rated voltage.

  205. lyn

someone help me some simple robotic with school purpose , topic , its my theses, help me or kindly. thanks in advance

  206. RonRockey

hai… i want to invent new robo…..????? anyone can help me…????

    • Coleman Benson

@RonRockey Although RobotShop does not offer design services, you might try locally; find out if there are local robotics clubs / groups, and check local colleges / universities to see if there are engineering students who might be interested.

  207. Vivan Barman

I want to make a simple robot ,it is very tuff to make this robot…….

    • Simon Latour

@Vivan Barman, RobotShop sells a variety of kits for beginners. Don’t hesitate to contact our sales department to let them know what you are looking for, they will be able to help you find the best kit for you.

  208. wastu prashar

I want to make a simple me i am in class 12…

  209. stenberg

I am really impressed to read this blog. Wonderful writing abilities as well as with the format for your weblog. Anyway stay up the excellent high quality writing.

  210. Sowl

sir.. i`am a computer science student who curiously wants to learn how to make a robot even in simple way, i just want to make my own even robotics are not part of my course because were focusing in software. i hoping that you can advice or give me some info what the materials that i needed.. i want to make a fight bot but i will not use it for battle just for my sample

    • Coleman Benson

@Sowl That’s the objective of this article. If you want it to “fight”, you will need to have a microcontroller and sensors as well.

  211. Nashmia

This project seems to be difficult. I think i wont be able to make it. Would you plz tell me an easy way to make it. I am 13 years old only and i want something awesome for my school exhibition. Plz do help me Sir

  212. tyson

wow i prepared but!!!!!!!!!!! my robot,s programming has interupting thing as a result the robot is working malfunctionally !!! help me

    • Coleman Benson

@tyson Is the robot the same as the one described in this post? If not, we invite you to create a new topic on the letsmakerobots forum and provide details.

  213. Rorisang Mahomo

hey ..i am 13 Years and from SA . i want to create a robot that can change into a pen, pencil and a marker, so please help on how to do it

    • Coleman Benson

@Rorisang Mahomo If you want the robot to be the size of a real pen/pencil / marker, then that will be very difficult. If you can make it simply look like a pen / pencil and don’t care if it’s really large (like a prop), then it’s certainly possible. We do not offer consultation services, so if you’re entirely new to robotics, we suggest you start with much easier projects.
