Fun, easy and well built

Review by Dave

I bought this for my 10 year old son for Christmas. We've had a blast programming it and trying out many new sensors and how they can work together. He uses the Scratch interface, I use the Arduino IDE when he's off to bed :) The quality is so great at this price point. Lots of fun to be had.

Top Notch

Review by RONALD

Premium quality parts, straightforward to assemble, clear instructions, and integrates with the Arduino IDE, although it also comes with a child friendly computer interface for programming. I'm having a blast teaching this robot new things.

Very solid starter kit

Review by Adrian

I bought this for an 8 year old and 11 year old. We found the assembly instructions straightforward to follow, and the 8 year old learned some useful things about tools in the process. Everything went together neatly with no forcing. The robot itself is a robust metal framed device, which has survived climbing an obstacle and flipping over a couple of times. The kids think it looks cute, but the cat is wary of it.

It would have been nice to have the coin cell for the remote included for quick testing when the robot was assembled - I didn't have any in stock, and it took a couple more days to get one. By that point we'd started programming the robot in Scratch.

The software download is large and a little complex to set up initially, but easy to use once installed. Just be sure to select the arduino mode when running mblock, and to pick the correct USB comport. The module type is Orion, and there's not much in the documentation to point that out without searching. The 11 year old, who has some Scratch experience from school, has managed to write simple behaviours using the ultrasound distance sensor.

Recommended, but an experienced adult will be useful during the first setup.

Was looking for something to replace NXT's i was using in class. This fits into my budget and was happy with instruction books and diagrams.

great gift!

Review by larry

this robot was easy to assemble. the finished product is fun and kept my grandson entertained. I would have liked the instructions to be more detailed, but I was able to build the robot. instructions for the set screws need to include start the set screw before installing the wheel hub. to install the set screw after the hub is installed was difficult. I had to remove the hub and start the set screw. the wiring diagram could use more detail for someone with limited experience like me. the wiring connection port for the remote interface was not descriptive enough. despite these comments I would definitely recommend the robot for a gift for entry level use. these comments aren't meant to be a negative for the use of the robot, only a warning for people with limited skills like me.

Bought this for my 11 year old granddaughter. We had a great time putting it together and also to see her eyes light up when her efforts produced success.
It was a great toy.

Quality robot kit

Review by Michael

I bought this kit for my 14 year old son as a follow up to the OWL Robotic Arm. He enjoyed putting the robot tank together and is still playing with it several months later. I am impressed with how well machined the parts are and how solid the robot tank feels.

Amazing Hardware !

Review by pierre

I am at the start of this new venture of refreshing my electronic knowledge and applying it to the world of robotic. The Starter Robot Kit is my first real project. The hardware is amazing. Only recommendation is to replace the white plastic rivets with 2 of the supplied screws to secure the micro controller board to the aluminium frame (via the threaded slots). After this small modification, you will end up with a very sturdy base to build upon. Other recommendation is to pay very close attention to what type of board is included with your kit. The Orion (UNO equivalent) or the Leonardo equivalent... Not knowing this information may lead you to spend a lot of time fixing something that is not broken. Finally, if you bought the IR version and the robot does not behave according to the remote control arrows as you try it the first time, you have to change the wiring of the motors at the micro controller board end. The instructions specifically mention that you may have to swap wiring around but does not specify how. In my case I had to swap the 2 orange connectors and also the wires inside one of the orange connectors. I am really happy to have selected this kit to start my robotic project. In fact I ordered a significant amount of other makeblock components. As for RobotShop, great price, great product selection, quick delivery, and very professional web site. Becoming my best friend

Best starter kit for little ones

Review by Aaron

We love it! I bought this after my 3.5-year old got excited about the line-drawing robot and rovers at NASA's open house. And I chose robotshop.com because the shipping was cheaper than Makeblock's own website. I've since recommended this (and robotshop) to every techie/hacker dad I know. I got the IR version because I wanted a toddler-grade rugged remote with real buttons. Then I added the Bluetooth module for more hacking fun in the future. My 3.5-year old and 1.5 year old have lots of fun with the robot. It's opened up some interesting observations and discussions that carry over to daily life. Like how robots use energy from the batteries and how they move slower when batteries can run out of energy. And how to recharge them. Or how to "teach" the robot to use its "eyes." Or why its "eyes" can't see mama's fuzzy bunny slippers. Good times.
