The Sweep V1 360° Laser Scanner is a scanning LiDAR sensor designed to bring powerful 360 degrees sensing capabilities to everyone at an affordable price.  On robotic vehicules, it is an ideal sensor for detecting and avoiding obstacles. Whether in the air or on land, robots need to understand their surroundings to navigate safely. The need for intelligent sensors becomes critical when robotic vehicles are tasked to navigate near people or high value objects. Sweep provides long range and accurate range data to objects, even in noisy sunlit environments. By providing a full 360 degree field of view, Sweep offers an economical way to replace a host of other range sensors, while providing higher resolution and more accurate data.

As an IoT device, Sweep can be used to detect the quantity and location of people within a space. Its long range and wide field of view allow Sweep to monitor large spaces.  Sweep does this without introducing privacy concerns that traditional video cameras present.

Surveying with scanning LiDAR has traditionally been very expensive. Sweep brings the ability to collect this vital data quickly and cheaply. With 3D scanning add-on (currently in development), Sweep can create full spherical scans of environments. This has huge implications for those wanting to document 3D environments.

Slow, not too precise, not cheap

Relatively good with long-range measurements. Has all known problems what Time Of Flight technology has at short distances. Very unprecise when the distance is less than 30cm. The latest addition to the list is finding this device on the market.

Serious sleeve problem, more than 15% of devices arrived have had broken skate (contact between axel and TOF -unit) giving noise to measurements or unit fails self-check. This part is relatively easy to change and can be purchased separately from Alibaba for U$2. There are better products at the market, also newer technologies.

- The low sampling rate (i.e. low angular resolution) and low ranging accuracy makes it difficult to use it in SLAM algorithms

Well documented, easy to use. This is the best way to learn to use a LiDAR. I wish it could measure in 3D (instead of 2D), but at this price I can not complain. Great value.

+ Small
+ Good range
+ Easy to integrate into any app
+ Clear an concise datasheet
+ Very light
+ Excellent value for money

- Accuracy is less than expected but enough for many apps.
- Home and lab apps, I would not put this device into the field.

+++ Lidar works nicely.
++ USB power is sufficient to work.
+ Unit is smaller than I expected.
+ Manual is easy to read and thorough.
+ Visualization software works under Debian 9 (note: 64-bit required).

- Holding the lidar in hand, I can sense slight vibration when rotating fast - so I plan to balance the lidar head with the same methods as I use to balance model helicopter blades.

Small unit

No setup, just plug in

Supporting documentation from Scanse is excellent

Support from Scanse is superb (thanks David).

I am developing an application in VB.Net and able to issue all the commands and receive responses to/from the Sweep. On my side, just having a little trouble with the final part of data manipulation in VB.Net, which is nearly fixed.

As for the Sweep, great little unit.
