UPDATE:  6 Oct, 2013

Ok, I have been too lazy to update this as this was done a month or so ago. I hereby declare this project complete. It is now bigger and better! Below are some photos and a video of the completed matrix and driver board(click any picture for a larger view)-

displaying numbers

hi this isnt really to do with robots but it is building something with electronics so i thought i'd ask here because i know the users are friendly and someone will probably be able to help me.

Can't figure out how this 4 digit display works

Sorry this isn't really a robot related question, just an electronics one.

I was cruising through a local electronics shop. They have lots of salvaged parts. They had a whole box of old 4 digit LED clock displays. Since they were only about $3, I picked one up. My son wanted to build a clock.

After working through all the connections, here's the schematic.

Can these displays be controlled by a Picaxe?

I found these 2 displays in an old cd/casete/radio combo and was wondering if they were worth keeping,
and if they could be controlled using a Picaxe.
I know that a picaxe can control a display buy using a serial interface but these ones dont have that,
they have about 30 pins, not including the ones for the back lite.
