The Quad UART w/ 16 Byte TX/RX FIFO, 68 pin PLCC 54pc Bundle (SB16C554A) is an enhanced version of the 16C550 Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter. Each of its four channels can be set to FIFO mode, reducing the CPU overhead for input/output operations. Each channel performs serial-to-parallel conversion of the data received from peripheral devices to the CPU, or vice versa. The CPU can read all status information of the UART at any time during the functional operation. This status information includes the type and condition of the transfer operations being performed by the UART, as well as any error conditions such as parity, overrun, framing, and break interrupt. With its complete modem control capability and an interrupt system that can be programmed to the users requirements, SB16C554A minimizes the computing resources required to handle communication links.
