  • DFRobotShop Rover V2 - Arduino Compatible Tracked Robot (Basic Kit)
    Versatile Platform
    Review by Jacob
As my first foray into robotics, this platform was a fantastic choice. It's well-constructed, sturdy, and uses a lot of standards. Being based on an Arduino Uno with plenty of expansion ports like the XBee sockets gives it a ton of flexibility. To mine, I added an ultrasonic sensor, a temperature and humidity sensor, and a security camera. I highly recommend the available expansion plate if you want to affix anything to the top of your rover.

  • Lynxmotion Tri-Track Chassis Kit (no electronics)
    Well made, easy to assemble.
    Review by Andrew
This is a really well made kit, the plastic mounting boards are laser cut and very accurate, everthing went together very easily following the instructions which I downloaded. I've got it running just with radio control and a Sabertooth controller at the moment and it performs very well. The tracks are very good with grippy rubber block tread.

  • VEX IQ Super Kit
A big improvement but *almost* everything
    Review by Raymond
I've used the "classic" Vex Robotics Design System, Mindstorms RIS, NXT and EV3 and some others like Multiplo. The Vex IQ is a big step forward from the classic VEX and has some nice and unique pieces and mechanically it's hard to beat. The only shortcoming is a narrow range of sensors, some of the other lines have a wider assortment and they're really not expensive enough to warrant omitting them.

  • DFRobotShop Mecanum Rover 2.0 - Arduino Compatible Robot (Basic Kit)
    Let down by one flaw
    Review by Joel
Kit is of reasonable physical quality, except the USB port is only soldered down and quite weak. Major design flaw in the board is that the PWM output for the motors uses up all the timer pins on the arduino.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi Joel,

We are certainly sorry to hear that you had an issue with the USB connector, and assuming the product was under warranty, would have replaced the entire board free of charge. With regard to the pinout, we had to choose four pins to dedicate to the onboard dual motor controller. We did our bes tot choose pins which are as little used by other shields as possible. Unfortunately a Mecanum driven robot requires a total of four H-bridges (each needs one digital pin and one PWM pin), meaning a total of eight of the 13 digital pins on the Arduino are used. If you add encoders, those require a further four pins, leaving only the analog and either the Tx or Rx pin.

Robot Construction Kits

Posted on April 23, 2014

By Coleman Benson & filled under GoRobotics >> Education, Robotics Projects & Kits, Where to Start.

Robot Construction Kits can be distinguished from normal robot kits since they use modular parts and allow you to assemble different robots using the same parts. A robot kit on the other hand only allows you to build one robot. Robot construction kits are a great investment because they tend to include everything you need [...]

By Coleman Benson & filled under Industry, Research, Robotics Projects & Kits, Swarm.

It has been a few years since RobotShop released the original DFRobotShop Rover, and we continue to be amazed and delighted with what people are using them to do. Recently German researchers used the DFRobotShop Rover as well as additional parts (light sensor, camera, software) to mimic the simple nervous system of an insect (using [...]

New Lynxmotion Wheeled Rovers

Posted on August 30, 2013

By Coleman Benson & filled under Robotics Projects & Kits.

Lynxmotion is well known for its high quality robotic construction kits, especially walking robots and robotic arms, but did you know the same modular SES system can be used to make wheeled rovers? Lynxmotion has recently released two new wheeled rover kits based on this principle: the A4WD2-KT and the A6WD2-KT. The new rovers were [...]

Basics: What Types of Mobile Robots are There?

Posted on March 07, 2012

By Coleman Benson & filled under Where to Start.

A custom robot design often starts with a “vision” of what the robot will look like and what it will do. The types of robots possible are unlimited, though the more popular are: Land-based wheeled robot Land-based tracked robot Land-based legged robot Air-based: plane, helicopter, blimp Water-based; boat, submarine Misc. and combination robot Stationary robot [...]
