The Makerfabs LoRaWAN Temperature/ Humidity/ Soil Moisture Sensor (868MHz) is a highly efficient solution for those seeking to use a sensor with TTN/ Helium. This sensor is an upgraded version of the popular LoRa Moisture sensor, retaining its base on Atmega328P. The Atmega328P controller is known for its compatibility with Arduino Uno, making it user-friendly, especially for those familiar with open hardware.
The LoRaWAN module RA08H, equipped with an ASR6601 SoC, is programmable, but it may not be as user-friendly for beginners compared to the Arduino Uno. Another advantage of this controller is its low sleep current, which is less than 1uA. This feature is particularly important for a LoRaWAN node that requires low power consumption.
The sensor monitors soil moisture using a capacitive method and is coated with a waterproof material to prevent corrosion, a common issue with cheaper resistor-mode soil moisture sensors. Additionally, it includes an onboard AHT10 - an air temperature/ humidity sensor, making it suitable for use in greenhouses.
The sensor is powered by three AAA batteries. With a sleep current of 26uA and a working current of 4 mA, it can operate for over a year on average, assuming a one-hour message interval and Class A operation.
