The Sherline Boring Bar w/ Carbide Insert LH 55° & 80° 3/8 is a precision tool designed for specialized machining tasks. It features a 3/8-inch diameter boring bar that securely holds a carbide insert with a Torx screw. This tool is available with either a 55° or 80° carbide insert, each offering distinct advantages for specific cutting applications. The 55° insert is suitable for creating sharper corners and fits into a 3/4-inch starting hole, while the 80° insert provides additional strength for roughing cuts and fits into a smaller 1/2-inch hole. The tool's holder is 3-1/4 inches long and can bore holes slightly over 2 inches deep when properly secured with two fastening screws. Constructed from 1144 Stress-proof steel and finished with black oxide, this boring bar is built for durability and reliability.
These left-hand boring bars are specifically designed for use with a new Sherline tool currently in development, intended to function as a turning tool from the backside with the bit positioned upside down. This design is not compatible with standard Sherline lathes without electronic modifications, as the spindle is not reversible.
Carbide insert tools, while more costly than high-speed steel tools, offer significant advantages in certain machining scenarios. They are particularly beneficial when working with exotic metals such as stainless steel or titanium, or abrasive materials like carbon fiber. Carbide inserts maintain their cutting edge longer and can expedite the cutting process, making them indispensable in modern professional machine shops. Additionally, if a cutting edge becomes dull or chipped, the insert can be rotated to expose new cutting surfaces, effectively doubling the tool's lifespan.
Note: These left-hand boring bars are not intended for use on standard Sherline lathes without electronic modifications to reverse the spindle.
